It was Christmas eve, and for the adults,
That meant shopping and skating,
Partying and Holidaying, till the hours wee
Decorating the Christmas tree.
I did the same, getting lightening Amazon deals,
Home automation was one to be had,
Voila! The lights were all automated,
On one command the tree turned off, lit up.
The best in tech was installed,
Proud, I showed it off to one and many,
I invited my 6 year old to try it,
Google, behind it, hidden layers of logic.
“Where is Santa now”? was the question
“He is sleighing through the North Pole”
“But will be come down the chimney tonight?”
"I don’t know how to help with that”, seemed, contrite
I rose up to the occasion, a bit surprised,
Touched, by the innocence, I thought
“Is he serious?”
"Yes, Absolutely!” I replied to myself.
Filled in for Google, hope she was listening,
“If you be nice, yes, He will come down tonight!”
“To have milk and cookies”
“To leave behind some goodies”
There was hope, but till when?
There was belief, but only in the little hearts,
I knew fully well, that none of that will happen,
I knew what I had to do, and I had to hasten.
The stores were closed,
We had to dig in the closets,
Toys that he had never seen,
Were wrapped and placed under the tree.
There was a mumbling in the night,
A kid in his dream does not lie,
Not when he cannot get his answers,
From adults, Google, all those who matter.
Holidaying, shopping, making merry,
Spent, tired, I fell asleep,
But aware enough to hear him mutter,
“Merry Christmas! Did Santa come?”
By Christmas morning he had lost hope,
From the grapevine he had learnt,
Talking to friends, others, he believed,
That parents, family, leave things under the tree.
I was sad, after all that,
It was all in vain,
But he had to learn it some day,
Was the solace.
Sullen, I found my distraction,
Technology, gizmos, home automation!
“ok Google, turn off all holiday lights”
All turned off but one.
“There was a problem with the Christmas tree lights”
I tried again, and it would not turn off.
After all, it was Christmas,
And I had just done watching Stranger Things.
Trust me, this had worked 100s of times,
It was the best that Amazon had to offer,
5 star reviews, thousands, that made sense,
It had never failed before, even once.
